What is Hospice?

Hospice palliative care relieves suffering and improves people’s quality of life when no cure for their illness is possible. The essential aspects of Hospice Palliative Care are pain relief and psychological, social, and cultural support for the patient and their family. Hospice care is most often provided at home or in a hospice.

Given a choice, 75% of Canadians would prefer to die at home, surrounded by loved ones. However, care at the end of life can be emotionally and physically demanding. Skilled volunteer teams provide care and respite, making it possible for people to die at home. When dying at home is not possible, hospices often provide a residence where specialized nursing care is available.

You are not alone, Huron Hospice can help make moments matter.

For 30 years, Huron Hospice has provided compassionate care, emotional support, and practical assistance to individuals and families facing a life-limiting illness. Our care often includes managing grief and bereavement. Care can be provided in a home, a hospital, or a long-term care setting. Since 2018, specially trained nurses and volunteers have provided care at Bender House.

There are no fees for our services.

There are no charges for any of our services. No co-pay.

However, there is a cost to Huron Hospice for providing them.

The Ontario government contributes half of our annual revenue. They only pay some of the cost of nursing services. That means we rely on the incredible generosity of donors to fully fund our services.

Community Hospice
